In praise of the album side — twenty uninterrupted minutes as an argument against the way we consume everything else.
A side of an album is roughly twenty minutes. It is a strange, arbitrary unit that happened to become an art form, and it asks something of you that almost nothing else does anymore: stay here, in order, until it's finished.
What that constraint produces is structure. A build that takes eleven minutes to resolve. A quiet passage that only earns its quiet because of the four minutes of noise before it. You cannot shuffle your way into that feeling.
We think this is the same muscle that lets you sit with a long problem — a policy, a garden, a city block — and follow it through several movements without demanding a chorus every thirty seconds.
Try it this week. One side, start to finish, nothing else open. Notice how long it takes your attention to stop fidgeting. That number is worth knowing.
